What Washington actually requires

Under WAC 308-93-145, your registration number has to be displayed on both sides of the forward half of the hull, in plain block characters at least 3 inches tall, in a colour that contrasts sharply with the hull.

A few things that catch people out:

  • Digits and letters are separated by a hyphen or a space equal to one character width — WN 2067 NS, not WN2067NS.
  • The current-year decal goes within six inches of the number, on the same side.
  • Script, italic and outline fonts are not legal. It has to read as plain block.
  • Idaho follows the same 3-inch block-character rule, so a boat trailered between Coeur d'Alene and Spokane needs one set, not two.

We cut every set to spec and send a to-scale proof before anything goes on the machine, so nothing gets applied twice.

Why cast vinyl on a hull

Calendared film shrinks. On a hull that means the edges lift, water gets under the letters, and by the second season you are looking at a shadow of your old numbers.

We run 3M commercial cast air-release film on every marine job. It conforms to the curve, it does not shrink back, and it survives trailering, ramp scuffs and a Coeur d'Alene summer. Gelcoat, painted hulls, aluminium and poly kayaks all take it.

How it works

  1. Text us a photo of the hull — 509-720-8239 — with your registration number. That is all we need to price it.
  2. We send a to-scale layout proof. You see exactly how it sits on your boat before we cut.
  3. We cut it and install it — at your slip, on the trailer, or at our shop. A registration set takes about 30 minutes.

Warranty

Installed by JZAC: up to 7 years of workmanship coverage on eligible installations we perform, subject to material, surface, environmental, care and application conditions.

Self-apply kits: material coverage only. Because we do not control surface preparation or application, customer installation and workmanship are not covered.

Either way, if we cut it wrong or the film is defective, we recut it at our cost. We run 3M commercial cast vinyl on everything — it does not crack, shrink or chalk out the way cheap calendared film does after two Inland Northwest winters.

Where we install

Spokane · Spokane Valley · Liberty Lake · Newman Lake · Nine Mile Falls · Medical Lake · Cheney · Deer Park · Post Falls · Coeur d'Alene · Hayden · Rathdrum · Athol · Spirit Lake · Sandpoint

We work the ramps and marinas on Lake Coeur d'Alene, Lake Pend Oreille, Priest Lake, Loon Lake, Newman Lake and the Spokane River. Anywhere else in the country, the self-apply kit ships free.

Just registered a boat?

Get the numbers on before you launch. A missing or non-compliant registration display is the most common thing a marine deputy writes up at the ramp, and the fix takes half an hour.
